For those who want a point by point rebuttal!

Read the previous post as a reply to some of the things that are being raised by the readers of this blog. Thank you to all of you. Let's move on now to an answer to some of the things raised in the memo and through the questions of some concerned people raised in the comments sections of this blog.

NEW BUILDING
The building is taking long because of some very sad state of affairs, a situation for which the VC cannot be held responsible, except as a scapegoat of circumstances. According to what we students know, the building project had been started by the pre-Shrivastava regime. In that regime, the "land" allocated by the govt. for the building was a POND, a stretch of water. After much struggle, the location of the allocated land was changed. The VC might have had his personal achievements to have an indelible name but he was the one who got "land" instead of "water" to build the building. Next, the contractors, Nagarjuna Construction Co. which are based in Hyderabad had been booked for the construction by the pre-Shrivastava regime. Obviously, the money of the university is getting siphoned in the process of maintaining the cost of that construction and every now and then, we hear how there are efforts to renegotiate parts of the contract to make the project feasible. DESPITE ALL OF THAT, the building has already been constructed, many fixtures are in place, painting has been done and only about 25% of the job is left before moving in. That's what the update on the building is. Added to this was the whole compulsion by a certain ex-EC member who insisted on getting a place for his friend Mr. Deshpande from Bombay as Engineer (as stated in his statement to a local newspaper). This gentleman used to come from Bombay, stay at the Hotel Babylon and apparently supervised the work. That's what the university is struggling with as well. I don't know how all the blame can be put on Shrivastava for this!! If anything, now Deshpande is no more the engineer and Nagarjuna Co. is in threat of losing part of its contract to the PWD - which is why this strike comes about in the first place!

REGISTRAR AND FACULTY
Posts have been duly advertised. HNLU is perhaps the ONLY national law school which has through the EC, already, in principle, agreed to apply the 6th Pay Commission salaries for teachers. Every now and then, posts are advertised. This is the only university which provides for accomodation and other facilities for teachers. Then if people do not apply because they do not want to stay in Raipur, it is hardly Shrivastava's fault. If it is, the only solution he has is to shift HNLU to Bombay or someplace! If you want more info on the dates of advertisements etc, check with the administration. We don't know all of that.

HOSTELS AND MESS
As far as the campus is concerned, there is not enough room in the present building to house the hostels. The hostels were earlier closer to the college but now they are not because the houseowners refused to renew the lease because they thought the students were rowdy and made lot of noise. The landowners were freaked out. Hence the new hostels. There have been instances such as one student who was doped out "walked" from a balcony of the 6th floor straight to the Mother Earth's bosom.
As far as the mess arrangements are concerned, my personal opinion is such that if a mess is there, and it provides meals at reasonable prescribed timings, and transport is provided by the university to commute between the hostel and the mess, it is fine. Every single educational institution in this country has a mess which has food during prescribed hours. After that if anyone is hungry, MK Shrivastava is not asking them to stay hungry. They can go out and get food to eat!
The administration had earlier housed the mess in the hostels itself from where there were reports of stealing and maladministration and it was at these incidents that the mess was shifted in the first place.
Solutions that MK Shrivastava could have provided here? Any guesses? Maybe stayed in the hostels late at night to ensure that people don't disturb landowners? Maybe that would have raised other issues of breach of privacy of students and Big Brother behaviour. What are we asking for here?

If after all of this, the strike is for lack of cleanliness, then god help us!! Keep raising questions though! And HEAR THE OTHER SIDE TOO. After all, they are asking us to "revive" HNLU by shutting it down! How ironical.

Peace!

  2. @ Concerned...

I have a couple of questions that you might be able to answer as for some reason the strikers do not seem interested in updating anymore.

    1. What is the current status of the strike? The number of students willingly on strike?

    2. How many are not a part of the strike?

    3. What is the VC doing and is there no statement from him?

    4. Do you think any decision / conclusion is in the offing?

    5. What is the Executive COuncil doing? Is it not going to convene an emergency meeting?

    6. What has the Chancellor of the UNiversity said?

  3. ALSO: I AM NOT TAKING SIDES BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, HNLU IS THE BIGGEST LOSER.

NO RECRUITER WOULD COME AS THE MARKET IS ANYWAY DOWN AND NO ONE WILL WANT TO TAKE CHANCES.

WITH THE CLAT SOON, STUDENTS WILL NOT WANT HNLU AS THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER OPTIONS. SO THE TALENT ATTRACTED BY HNLU WILL IMMENSELY SUFFER.

  4. @ Madhavi,
I am not even attempting to say anything else to your comment!

    @ Anon 1,
I will answer your queries in a separate post.

    @ Anon 2,
Thank you for that comment. The picture is indeed grim and you brought it out well. Now it is up to the students of HNLU how they bounce back. We need more fearless voices in here.

  5. u said that u want some fearless voices but tell me one thing- are u fearless. Bcoz if u are fearless then come in public and speak something. Dont try to hide urself under curtain. and tell u one thing, it is very easy to blame others by this way. If ur points are genuine then why didnt u speak in GBM. Another thing is that as u say they convinced others, to this i want to say that they convinced others by their selfless works of helping others for last 4 or 4 n half yrs. Selfish people like u could not get friends or in ur mentality i would say blind follower so u are feeling jealous from them that's why u are doing this.
As much as things about VC are concerned then tell me something
    1. From where this fellow get one house of 3.75 crore in bhopal near the house of CM only in 4 years because when he came to this university he had only one scooter, one maruti 800 and used to live in a govt. quarter?
    2. From where he bought a mitsubishi pajero which was put in one of the pass-out student's home?
    3. From where he bought a scoda octavia?
    4. From where he bought land in Hyderabad, Gomti Nagar(Lucknow) and in Raipur?
when it comes to point by point rebuttle tell me how many times students went to him for there demands and he fulfilled them.
Another thing is what u are saying is that faculty left this collage because of the reason that they got better pakage. To it tell me why did they get better pakage from other places only after this fellow came to this university. another thing Prof. Ajappa left this collage and went to NLS and Prof. Dixit went to NLIU, both are NLUs, and as much as i know all national law schools gives about equal pakage to teachers so where comes the point of better pakage.
If they need beeter pacage then Prof. S. jaffer Hussain didnt come to India. he would teach in US only to get better pacage
i will ask u some more questions later.

  8. @ Abusive Anons in the end -

Tell Dr. Srivastava what you must about what you feel for him. We don't want you sharing your personal opinion of him here. Thanks.

No, all National Law Universities do not pay the same amount to teachers! Get your facts right. Use your RTI rights as a citizen of India if you want to confirm this.

As for the assets of the VC, why don't you file an RTI or get an independent committee to investigate? As in otherwise, here I can also say that he still owns only a Maruti and nothing else. He has no Octavia or Pajero or property as you mentioned. Otherwise, since all your charges are without any basis whatsoever, you are just defaming him. Say all this to him, not to us. We are not here to defend him on personal charges.

  12. Read the blog.. and the comment about registrar and faculty is totally incorrect. It is Mr. Srivastava only who is responsible for the teachers going out of the university. He may keep advertizing several times (fourth time in the year 2009), it is the conduct of a vice chancellor which affects a faculty. Faculty is not a servant of Mr. VC who cannot have his independent opinion. He treats the faculty members like his servants through his servants (non-teaching staff). Nowhere the condition is such of a faculty. Well, the facts speaks for themselves... How many faculty are now on rolls? Mr. Srivastava believes in having new lot of faculties every year, just to save his skin from being known to everybody. Right Strategy. He is a true politician.
